Brief: To create a waterproof story book in partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, that parents can use during bath time to deliver the RNLI’s core ‘float’ message when children find themselves in an emergency situation in waters.

Response: From this I concepted, wrote, illustrated, designed, and mocked bespoke book pages and front cover. I developed the story into a cautionary rescue narrative, including a memorable rhyme, information on how to float, and a prompt for parents to include real world practice.

Please see below for the story, front cover, 8 pages, and characters I developed for the book:

Just Float.

I was given the 2 protagonists of lifeguards ‘Lily and Louis’ to use as heroes in the story. I decided to develop the characters as otters, as they are known for floating and swimming effortlessly on their backs, and felt they would be more engaging to the TA of under 4 year olds.

The illustration itself includes hand-made mono prints, vector illustration, and consistent branding throughout.

The project resulted in a pitch win for the agency, with the creative being greatly received by the client, and is due to be included in this year’s media strategy.
